Description:
In combination with the conversion of an adjacent grade II listed building the client wished to build two new homes on the site of a previous tool hire yard. Being in close proximity to the heritage asset, and within the Dorking Conservation Area, the project required careful planning to ensure the design not only enhanced the conservation area but also celebrated and drew attention to the newly renovated listed building.
Set in a slightly staggered formation, the pair of semi-detached homes are positioned to draw your eye not only to them, but also beyond towards the historic structure. Designed to suit modern living and to maximise internal space, each house comprises of a master bedroom suite, one double bedroom, family bathroom, ground floor shower room and open plan kitchen, living and dining room. The positioning of the houses also means that both enjoy separate driveways and rear private gardens, which given their central town location, was a key to the original brief.
Whilst the form of the houses are designed to reflect the rear of the listed building, Zinc and Cedar cladding are applied to the first floor to give the properties a modern aesthetic and create a careful contrast with the historic materials nearby. Full height windows and concealed gutters again portray modern style and techniques, while the simplified shape and brick detail achieve in sensitively embedding the homes into their more traditionally styled surroundings.
