Description:
The clients came to us looking to make the most of their large rear garden which was originally separated from the main ground floor living rooms by an old metal conservatory which they barely used. Located within the restrictive context of the Chiswick House Conservation Area, the project required a careful design and planning strategy to create a proposal for extending to the rear which would be acceptable to the local council, whilst also enhancing the large 3-storey Victorian semi-detached house.
The design resulted in the removal of the conservatory and the creation of a new contemporary single storey rear extension, together with the removal of internal walls to create a large open plan kitchen, living and dining room which looked out into the garden. In addition to the extension works a complete modernisation of the ground floor was undertaken, along with a new frameless skylight inserted into the extension roof, allowing daylight to flood into the centre of the floor plan.
The main feature of the extension was a rear ‘glass box’ with floor to ceiling structurally glazed walls, including full height rear facing sliding doors creating a seamless transition between the interior and the relandscaped garden. Additionally, to again improve the relationship between inside and out, an extra-large portrait window sits to the side of the glass box with its cill designed to act as a window seat for the family.
