Description:
The client came to us with an open brief to design a brand-new modern home on a farm, with the intention to move into it from a nearby original historic farmhouse on the same land. The site, which lies within the Green Belt and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), presented a brilliant opportunity to create a design that engaged with and enhanced the surrounding environment, as well as bridging the divide between internal and external spaces.
Designed across two rectangular wings either side of a central corridor, the house comprises of two double bedrooms, a master bedroom suite, family bathroom, utility room and an open plan kitchen, living, dining room. As the focal point of the home the open plan space features a double-sided log burner defining the dining and living areas, double height vaulted ceiling, and full height corner window looking out to the garden and countryside beyond.
Cedar was chosen for the external cladding to reflect the neighbouring woodland and countryside setting, whilst Sedum trays were laid on top of the butterfly shaped roof allowing wildflowers to bloom throughout the year, greatly encouraging local biodiversity and blending the new home into its setting. Full height windows and skylights are used to maximise natural light to all areas of the house, whilst a Ground Source Heat Pump ensures that all hot water and heating comes from an on-site renewable source.
