Description:

The clients came to us looking to replace their existing bungalow with a pair of two storey semi-detached homes, creating separate homes for two generations of their family. The site, set on a residential road with a wide mix of styles and forms, offered a great opportunity to design a pair of modern houses, whilst keeping below neighbouring ridge heights and maximising internal space for what would be quite narrow floor plans due to the division of the site.

The internal layouts, although featuring the same rooms in each house, are adjusted to suit the requirements of the future owner, resulting in a staggered floor plan which adds depth to the elevations. Four double bedrooms, two en-suites and a family bathroom are positioned at first floor to ensure every bedroom has a front or rear facing window, whilst the ground floor has a dedicated living room, utility, W.C. and large open plan kitchen, living, dining space opening out onto the garden.

Although a semi-detached pair, by setting the right unit back and not using a mirrored design, the front facades are designed to give the impression that they are two separate homes, whilst the use of the same brick, timber cladding and modern elements ensures that they appear cohesively designed. A timber-clad two storey front bay window acts as a main feature both to the internal rooms and the front façade, managing to replicate a feature found all along the road, whilst its modern appearance ensures it is fully connected with the aesthetic of the overall scheme’s design.
