Description:
The client’s brief was for us to design a significant rear extension in order to add additional living space at ground floor and a new master suite at first floor. The house, located within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Greenbelt, benefited from a large rear garden and originally shallow depth of floor plan, meaning adding a large extension to the rear would not be out of keeping with the plot or surrounding properties, a key planning consideration given the protected area.
Following the demolition of some previously added uninsulated rooms, a new open plan kitchen, living, dining room was added within the ground floor of the rear extension, stretching across the entire width of the house. Above the Kitchen the new master suite was added, with new views out towards the rear garden and countryside beyond. Although mostly two-storey, the design included a single-storey portion in order to not block an original rear facing bedroom window. This created a ‘feature’ living area with fully glazed rear elevation following the angle of the pitched roof above.
As well as the extensions, key alterations were made to the original floor plan to ensure the rear addition would not block off the functionality of existing rooms, with the family bathroom and utility remodelled to account for the removal of previous rear facing windows and the entrance hall widened to create a clear route into the new rear extension. Externally the design sought to replicate the stylings of the original property, matching the roof shape, clay roof tiles and fair-faced brickwork, whilst a symmetrical rear elevation was designed to feature full height windows into the open plan living space.
